Separating Together

Separating Together is a collaborative divorce practice group whose member
attorneys restrict their law practices to handling family matters, such as
separation and divorce, through non-adversarial, transformative
conflict resolution and settlement negotiation.

Martha J. Mason

Martha J. Mason has been an attorney for twenty-four years. She received her B.A. degree, with honors, from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, in 1976. Following her graduation, she worked on Capitol Hill for two years. She attended law school at the University of Virginia School of Law, where she graduated in 1981.

From 1981-1998, Ms. Mason was a litigation attorney and partner with Smith, Anderson, Blount, Dorsett, Mitchell, and Jernigan in Raleigh. In 1998, she took a leave of absence and later resigned from the law firm to care for her aging parents and young children. Having found in her years of practicing law that the most professionally satisfying cases for her were the ones that were resolved before they ever got to court, she has decided to devote her practice exclusively to collaborative law in family matters.

Ms. Mason is married to Steve Mason, a partner with Smith, Anderson, Blount, Dorsett, Mitchell, and Jernigan. They have two sons, ages 19 and 16.
